What are people like you saying about Barbara Steel and her CD: This Satin Doll?

Eclectic, sultry, innovative treatment of old songs, like a breath of fresh air
Reviewer: Norman Goodman, formerly with The Guess Who

The music is very provocative in that ones senses are stirred by the innovative treatment of some very old songs. The essential jazz core is retained while the overall soundscape is given new life by such a beautiful voice. Jazz is and should be a progressing musical style, as is aptly demonstrated on this cd. Gorgeous lead vocal, songs have a playful touch, listeners should pay special attention to the exceptional tone and vibrato of this woman's voice.

Original approach combined with original arrangements to great songs
Reviewer: Jeffrey Tepper, Executive Music Producer

songs are critical when you see a new cd from a new artist. Although that's what brings you to this cd, it's the original arrangements and steel's voice that make you play it over and over again. This cd obviously took a lot of thought, it isn't just another singer getting together with another band....it's really special.

On The Street, Arthur Shuey

We used to have female jazz singers like this in Wilmington. Real ones. Not the "when in doubt, do a blues" type, but the ones who understand the freedom and expressive potential of jazz. This Satin Doll is modern, hip, smooth, sexy material. It also features an all-star cast. Lou Soloff(trumpet), Melvin Sparks(electric guitar) and Mark Peterson(bass) guest on the release, and those names should perk up some ears. Barbara Steel is a real jazz person, and real jazz people look at standard tunes and standard song forms more or less as children look at the frame of a backyard swing set - It's the frame for the swing itself, but that swing can be the imaginary horse, imaginary jet, imaginary balloon, or just a perspective from which to watch the world move a little differently. That's what's cool about it, and Barbara Steel is right in the middle of that jazz cool. It's also a nice, clean recording. Marc Puricelli is less than ideal as a vocal duet partner on "Baby, It's Cold Outside," but he's not awful, his piano work is on target, and Ms. Steel's delivery . . . reassures this middle-aged critic about testosterone levels. If you are a jazz listener, this release will help you explain to others why you're a jazz listener. If you're a jazz singer, this release will challenge you to actually sing jazz.

This is another overseas artist that I've recently been introduced to, and if offers a touch of contemporary jazz, laced with modern grooves and skilful instrumentation. Barbara makes her specialty in phrasing and in bringing out the true value of the old songs. The opening track, "Satin Doll" sums up her smooth, sensual style in an acid jazz environment. Later there is a more old-style jazz number "Love For Sale", which contains a beautiful piano and flute sound. Barbara delves into a Beatles song "I Should've Known Better" for a delightfully haunting rendition. She has capable accompaniment with a set of fine musicians, in bringing the jazz and swing elements to the fore. Jazz enthusiasts will love this album because they would have heard the beautiful voice of Barbara Steel give a new and sexual enhancement.
